Integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Smart Grids in Ships and Ports

The topic of Integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and smart grids in ships and ports was selected via a poll of the members of IEEE PES Marine Systems Coordinating Committee (MSCC) and introduced during the plenary session of MSCC meeting in late January 2021. Within this frame the following actions were taken:

  • The topic was discussed with the Organizing Committee of the IEEE Electric Ship Technology Symposium (ESTS), which is a conference covering the scientific areas related to the MSCC. As the call of the conference had been launched, it was decided that the topic would be covered via papers and tutorials. Thus, two papers were submitted, approved, and presented in IEEE ESTS ‘21.
  • Moreover, one tutorial was also approved and presented during IEEE ESTS ‘21
  • Additionally, a webinar was proposed and approved by IEEE Smart Cities.
  • Furthermore, during informal meetings within MSCC several issues related to the topic will be covered with the proposed amendment of IEEE 45.1 on ship energy system design (The PAR has been submitted and expected to be approved by IEEE-SA by late September 2021).
  • This topic has been discussed in the forum of the IEEE European Public Policy Committee (EPPC) as well, especially during the proposed amendment of the “Electrification in Transportation” policy document approved on July 27th, 2021 meeting. Moreover, a first discussion has been made about preparing a policy document on smart ports.

Assessing the implementation of Power Take Off (PTO) system onboard Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) carriers, A. Souflis-Rigas, J. Prousalidis, G. Dimopoulos, IEEE ESTS 2021, paper No 4038 [DOI: 10.1109/ESTS49166.2021.9512353]
On Estimating the Port Power Demands for Cold Ironing Applications, F. D’Agostino, G. P. Schiapparelli, S. Dallas, D. Spathis, V. Georgiou, J. Prousalidis, IEEE ESTS 2021, paper No 4045 [DOI: 10.1109/ESTS49166.2021.9512359]
Proposed Amendments of the following policy documents: Electrification of Transportation in the European Union – 2 November 2017 (PDF, 602 KB) DC Electricity Distribution in the European Union: An opportunity for energy efficiency in Europe – 27 March 2017 (PDF, 545 KB) The two policy documents listed above (“Electrification of Transportation in the European Union”, and “DC electricity Distribution in the European Union…”) are ones adopted in 2017 and do not include the amendments proposed regarding ships and ports. These two policy documents will be replaced by the respective amended versions only later this year, once they have been reviewed and approved firstly by the IEEE European Public Policy Committee (EPPC) and then by the IEEE Global Public Policy Committee (GPPC). At the time, the IEEE EPPC does not have a public repository for the drafts of its policy documents, since these may change during the reviews made by the IEEE EPPC and the IEEE GPPC.

The following article was contributed by Heather Tomley of Port of Long Beach, California. The author examined the efforts of Port of Long Beach to reduce carbon emission through using electric ships, trucks, trains, cranes, etc to replace diesel fuel. In addition, Port of Long Beach also built a microgrid for resilience: “Schneider Electric will design, engineer, construct, and commission the microgrid. The project entails installing a 300-kW solar carport, an energy control center with microgrid controls, and a 330-kW stationary battery energy storage system.”
