Sustainable Maritime

January 2023

The topic of Sustainable Maritime was selected during the IEEE PES Marine System Coordinating Committee (MSCC) plenary meeting in October 2022.  The topic was officially seconded by Mr. Rudi Schubert from IEEE-SA during the plenary session of the MSCC meeting in full alignment with a new Industry Connection Activity with the same name. This activity is lead by vice-chairman of MSCC John Prousalidis and within the framework of the “Planet Positive 2030” in which IEEE is committed. Within this context the following actions were taken:

  • A special issue on “smart sustainable ports” was approved by the IEEE Εlectrification Magazine (Publish Date: March 2023)
  • A special session within “ESARS-ITEC 2023” is to take place during the conference planned to be held in Venice (Italy) in 28-32 March 2023.
  • A panel session within “ESARS-ITEC 2023” is to take place during the conference planned to be held in Venice (Italy) in 28-32 March 2023.
  • This topic has been discussed in the forum of the IEEE European Public Policy Committee (EPPC) as well, especially during the proposed amendment of the “Electrification in Transportation” policy document approved on July 27th, 2021 meeting. Moreover, a new policy document “on smart and sustainable ports” that has been approved to be elaborated within 2023 is in alignment with the hot topic.

Implementing the smart port concept

IEEE-PES Tutorial: 2021
Speaker:
John Prousalidis

In view of decarbonization after the directives of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), green shipping technologies comprise a fairly great number of measures, some of which are strongly related to electric power engineering. Based on the fact that electricity in inland premises is generated via environmentally friendly methods, extensive electrification of both ports and ships integrating the concept of smart micro grids is the key towards a sustainably green maritime sector. This holistic approach comprises a number of measures covered in the tutorial such as ship-to-shore interconnection (‘cold ironing’), deployment of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), installation of Energy Storage Systems for energy buffering and peak demand shaving, exploitation of smart lighting technology not only for illumination but also for communication, smart energy management of reefer power supply and cranes with regenerative braking. All energy related activities are supervised and controlled by a sophisticated Energy Management System. Last but not least, the interrelated risen challenges and concerns in the electrical engineering field are outlined.
