Piscataway, N.J. – 21 December 2022 – IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization advancing technology for humanity, is committed to supporting a global response to climate change. A newly released IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) report titled Towards Integrating Cyber and Physical Security for a More Reliable, Resilient, and Secure Energy Sector, provides a foundation for establishing the concept of “security integration,” which attempts to begin addressing these risks through a more integrated approach for cyber and physical security into the planning, design, and operational phases of the bulk power system. This report was created under the direction and guidance of a joint task force of IEEE members and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).
The IEEE PES Industry Technical Support Leadership Committee (ITSLC) provides support to and cooperates with governments, regulators, and other industry organizations globally on technical issues related to power, energy, and policy topics. This report is the culmination of work through a collaborative effort between NERC, IEEE, ERO and industry representatives. It addresses the following topics:
- Cyber and Physical Security Threats
- Planning- Integrating Security with Transmission Planning
- Design- Integration of Cyber and Physical Security with BPS Design
- Operations- Integrating Security with System Operations and Restorations
- Securely Integrating Emerging Technologies
It is intended for the broader audience including planners, design engineers, system operators, utilities, academics, vendors, policy makers, and regulators.
